The SCS presents the sixth in a continuing series of looks at the pre-production art of the World of Springfield line thanks to Chris Lauria, who does most of the playset art for Playmates Toys. This time around we have images from the making of Series 6's Springfield Arcade and First Church of Springfield sets. Here's Chris to give you the needed info on this artwork:
Sorry for the delay - I was a little overwhelmed with deadlines and other issues.... more on that later.
Here are some images for the Church and Arcade.
As you can see, these are very rough concepts, and if I remember correctly, we got these on the first round. We did not do color presentation art for either of these sets.
Playmates had sent us some reference that they got from Fox, and we gathered some of our own from various sources.
The Church was a little more straight forward since it pretty much looks the same in every episode as well as the reference. It was more of a matter of making room for figures. Not a lot of guess work. I am still trying to find the controls for this one.....I will post them if I find them.
The Arcade was more fun for me to work on since I was a typical "vidiot" growing up during the video game boom of the late 70's and early 80's. Going through the reference we had, and seeing all of the arcade games the Simpsons creators came up with was hysterical! It was so difficult to narrow it down to the 'final five' - and later, they removed two more! "Escape From Grandma's House" and "Pack Rat Returns" would have been great to keep. I believe they had even made the prototype model including all five before giving them 'the axe'. It was a cost issue (as always). "Larry The Looter" & "Slugfest" were in the set from the start, the other three were suggestions that I made, and we talked about. I was happy that "Nuke Canada" stayed - no offense to our Canadian brothers, but the idea is just so funny - what reason would we possibly have to 'nuke Canada'?!? LOL
The controls for both were done traditionally (pencil on trace), and at this point you can see that we were trying to add more detail even though we were only being paid to provide "rough controls".
Good news! My friend and former co-worker Colin, recently found some of the older controls for the first four sets! As soon as I can scan and assemble them, I will post them for your viewing pleasure.
More to follow!
Thanks to Chris and Playmates again!
