Magazine:

The SCS presents the second in a continuing series of looks at the pre-production art of the World of Springfield line thanks to Chris Lauria again. This time around, we look at the art involved with Krustylu Studios, Town Hall, and the original 2000 art for Moe's Tavern. Here's Chris to give you the needed info on this artwork:

Hello, everyone!

I hope you enjoyed the Living Room. The early sketches were very crude. This would be a rough thumbnail for me. Usually I would do a sketch like this, and then create a revised image that would be tighter. At that time, Playmates simply had us go from this rough sketch to rough control views. They handed that over to their sculptor and let him 'run with it'. This process changed as we went along.

Here are some more images from the early days of the playset development. I believe you have seen these, but hopefully they are better quality and resolution then what has been posted before since they are from the original digital files. We drew the black & white art with felt tip pens, scanned it, converted it in Streamline, and then rendered them in Illustrator. This creates a nice, clean, bright image that's easy to transfer (small file size), and easy to change.

The angle looks 'funny' since we did a lot of concepts as isometric drawings. It's an easier and quicker way to draw up an image without having to set up the perspective. It also helps when trying to determine scale. I later decided to draw all of the playset concepts in true perspective since it looks better for presentation purposes.

So far, I can't seem to find any of the concepts or controls for the following sets:

Nuclear Plant
Kwik-E-Mart
Springfield Elementary
Bowl-A-Rama

We didn't do color boards for these - we went from ROUGH concept art to ROUGH controls.

I also included a detail of the T.V. in "Moe's Tavern" since I don't know if it was ever clear before. I originally had "Truckasaurus" on the T.V., but the Fox guys did this label art. Even though this playset got dropped, and later revived, they still decided to put Bumblebee Man on the screen instead. I will send what I have for the revised Moe's Tavern later to compare.

I do have the Krusty Studio controls, and I will send them soon.

If anyone has any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

More to follow!

Chris

Thanks to Chris and Playmates again!
