Magazine:

The SCS presents the first in a series of looks at the pre-production art of the World of Springfield line thanks to Chris Lauria, who does most of the playset art for Playmates Toys. First up, appropriately enough, is the Simpsons Living Room from Series 1. Here's Chris to give you the needed info on this artwork.

Well, here are the first of many images to take a look at:
The Simpsons Living Room.
* Concept sketch
* rough controls

I should remind everyone that, unfortunately, I don't have all of the preliminary thumbnails and concepts that led up to this sketch. I should also note that these initial playsets I worked on with a former co-worker and good friend of mine, Colin. This was during my time working for a toy design studio. I was the "Creative Director", and Colin and I had the pleasure of developing these sets together.

You'll notice that the sketch and controls are very ROUGH. This was all we were asked to provide with the first group of sets. We didn't do any color boards for the first four sets either - just black & white concepts, then rough control views. It wasn't until the Church and Arcade that we started to 'tighten up' the controls. You'll see those soon.

I asked Colin if he has any copies of those early concept sketches, and I am waiting to see what he can find. I hope he does, since we had explored exterior walls that 'continued' the environments to the "outside". This was dropped due to costs, however. (...stupid money...)

We didn't have much reference to work from, just a few episodes that I had on video. We only had some style guide art for the characters, no environments. It was a lot of guess work. We also didn't have any figures to use for sizing since they were being sculpted, and didn't exist yet. All we knew was that Homer was 5" tall, but even scaling art of Homer to 5" doesn't give you an accurate form to work with. It's a little hard sometimes, to determine proportions when you don't have an actual figure to use.

Anyway, take a look, post your comments and questions, and enjoy!

Chris

Thanks to Chris and Playmates and we will be bringing you more in the near future!
